20 Years Of Progress Closing LUST Sites
EPA’s presentation depicts progress each state and territory made in closing underground storage tank release sites (also referred to as leaking underground storage tank, or LUST sites) over the 20-year period from 2004-2024. The maps in the presentation display the percentage of sites closed in 5-year intervals. This is derived by calculating cumulative cleanups completed out of cumulative confirmed releases. As of September 2024, 40 states closed over 90 percent of their UST release sites. Addressing the UST release sites remaining to be cleaned up continues to be a high priority for EPA and our state, territorial, and Tribal partners.
