Protecting the environment is a high priority for Alaskan Natives, most of whom fish, hunt, and gather as part of their traditional lifestyle. Located in northeast Alaska on the Draanjik River, Chalkyitsik means “fish hooking place.” The river has served as the home and fishing site for Gwich’in Athabascans for thousands of years.
