Background

The Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation South San Jose Plant Superfund site is located at 101 Bernal Road, about nine miles southeast of downtown San Jose, CA. This facility operated from 1977 to 1983 to manufacture electronics and semiconductors. The process used various chemicals, including the solvent 1,1,1-TCA, acids, and other materials.

In 1981, investigations discovered that an underground storage tank containing waste solvents had failed, releasing these chemicals into the ground. A public drinking water supply well located approximately 1,800 feet downgradient from the site, was impacted by 1,1,1-TCA contamination.
