2011 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement Booklet
From 2002 to 2015, EPA presented the National Award for Smart Growth Achievement to recognize and support communities that used innovative policies and strategies to strengthen their economies, provide housing and transportation choices, develop in ways that bring benefits to a wide range of residents, and protect the environment.
Awards were given in the following categories in 2011:
- Overall Excellence: Old North St. Louis Revitalization Initiative in St. Louis, Missouri
- Smart Growth and Green Building: Silver Gardens Apartments in Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Programs, Policies and Regulations: Plan El Paso 2010 in El Paso, Texas
- Rural Smart Growth: Maroney Commons in Howard, South Dakota
- Civic Places: Uptown Normal Roundabout in Normal, Illinois
Overall Excellence: Old North St. Louis Revitalization Initiative in St. Louis, Missouri
This Smart Growth Award recognized a community in St. Louis that redefined and rebuilt a historic neighborhood to attract new residents and economic growth while maintaining its distinctive character.
Smart Growth and Green Building: Silver Gardens Apartments in Albuquerque, New Mexico
This Smart Growth Award recognized the first LEED Platinum-certified affordable housing project in the Southwest, which incorporated innovative green design techniques and offered critical affordable housing near reliable transportation options.
Programs, Policies, and Regulations: Plan El Paso 2010 in El Paso, Texas
This Smart Growth Award recognized El Paso's comprehensive, transit-oriented development plan, Plan El Paso 2010, that sought to link neighborhoods to greater economic opportunity and to one another, creating new homes and jobs.
Rural Smart Growth: Maroney Commons in Howard, South Dakota
This Smart Growth Award recognized Maroney Commons, a green building project that generated jobs and taught rural communities about innovative environmental approaches to spur economic development.
Civic Places: Uptown Normal Roundabout in Normal, Illinois
This Smart Growth Award recognized the redesign of a roundabout in Normal, Illinois. Originally designed to manage traffic, the Uptown Normal Roundabout evolved into a civic gathering place and an anchor for economic revitalization, with green features that benefit the entire community.
