Drinking Water Optimization Program Goals and Guidelines
The Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) has adopted performance and monitoring goals, as well as operational guidelines, for public water systems (PWSs) to consider if they want to pursue “optimization.” AWOP goals and guidelines go beyond the drinking water regulatory requirements established to protect public health. The proactive AWOP approach helps PWSs to optimize their treatment and distribution systems, identify infrastructure needs, help ensure compliance with the regulations, and enhance public health protection. AWOP participation is voluntary and many AWOP states have recognition programs to highlight PWSs that meet the performance goals.
Program guidelines provide best-management practices to achieve water quality goals. The AWOP approach is based on years of research, EPA and primacy agency implementation experience, and consideration of regulatory requirements.
