Public Notice: EPA Begins Second Review of Chemical Recovery Systems Superfund Site
Summary
EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Chemical Recovery Systems site located on 142 Locust St., Elyria, Ohio. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up or where cleanup has been ongoing for at least five years – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the second five-year review of this site.
The site is not listed on the National Priorities List, or NPL but is an NPL-caliber site and is being addressed through the Superfund Alternative Approach. In 2015, the potentially responsible parties under the supervision of EPA began cleaning up contamination at the site. The cleanup at the site includes of disposing of contaminated debris, removing contaminated soil from the northwest corner of the property, placing clean cover soil over the entire site, and monitoring groundwater.
More information is available at the Chemical Recovery Systems EPA webpage. The review is expected to be completed in July 2025.
The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
