EPA Region 7 to Host Nov. 14 Open House for Newton County Mine Tailings Superfund Site
EPA officials will present a site update and information about the new residential soil lead guidance in Neosho, Missouri
LENEXA, KAN. (NOV. 12, 2024) – Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will host an open house session to provide community members with a site update and information about EPA’s updated residential soil lead guidance.
EPA’s new residential soil lead guidance, released in January 2024, lowered the screening level at residential properties from 400 parts per million (ppm) to 200 ppm.
Screening levels are not cleanup standards. While this update will help EPA site teams make site-specific cleanup decisions to protect nearby communities, EPA makes cleanup decisions specific to each site, using site-specific factors including risk factors and community input that can vary from site to site.
EPA’s open house will be held:
Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024
Open House: 6 to 8 p.m.
EPA presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.
Lampo Community Center
500 E. Spring Street
Neosho, MO 64850
Community members who attend the open house will also have the opportunity to learn about the cleanup progress at the site; learn more about community involvement and the Superfund process; and sign up for residential yard and private well water lead testing.
