Smith Foundry Settlement
Smith Foundry is an iron foundry located in the East Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. EPA conducted an unannounced inspection of the foundry in May 2023 and alleged the foundry failed to properly operate its pollution control equipment or maintain required records. EPA also alleged the foundry exceeded particulate matter emission limits for its industrial process equipment and violated airborne particulate matter rules.
In June of 2024, EPA announced a settlement with Smith Foundry. Within one year of the settlement, the company will shut down its furnace and casting processes and convert to a metal finishing facility. This will reduce the facility’s emissions by more than 90%, according to EPA’s review of emission reports submitted to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The company also agreed to an $80,000 penalty.
