Public Notice: Ionia City Landfill Five Year Review
Summary
The U.S. EPA is conducting the fifth five-year review of the Ionia City Landfill Superfund site in Ionia, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report.
Cleanup at the site began in 1985 when exposed drums were excavated and removed from the site. The site was later fenced, and a clay cap was installed over contaminated soil. EPA issued a final Record of Decision in 1989 to select the remedies for contaminated soil. EPA issued a second ROD in 2000 to address groundwater by installing a groundwater pump and treat system. The system was eventually shut down after most of the contaminants were removed, with monitored natural attenuation now being used as the approved remedy.
The five-year review at the Ionia City Landfill site gives the public an opportunity to comment about site conditions or concerns.
This is the fifth five-year review of the Ionia City Landfill site site. Its completion is expected by June 2025.
