Public Notice: EPA Begins Five-Year Review of PMC Groundwater Site in Petosky, Michigan
Summary
The U.S. EPA is conducting the fifth five-year review of the PMC Groundwater site in Petoskey, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report.
Cleanup at the site began in 1998 when the EPA issued a final Record of Decision to select the remedies for soil and groundwater at the Site. The EPA’s cleanup included:
- removing contaminated soil and disposing it offsite.
- installing and operating a soil vapor extraction system.
- monitoring natural attenuation of groundwater.
- placing limitations on use of the site and site access.
Long-term monitoring and groundwater cleanup continues in an area under Water Street and Bayfront Park. In 2022, EPA issued an Interim ROD that addresses contaminated vapors from the site. EPA’s cleanup for this Interim ROD includes installing and operating a soil vapor extraction system with air sparging of the groundwater.
The five-year review at the PMC Groundwater site gives the public an opportunity to comment about site conditions or concerns.
This is the fifth five-year review of the PMC Groundwater site. Its completion is expected by March 2025.
