The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 (FQPA) provided impetus for the establishment of the Endocrine Disruptor Screen Program (EDSP). FQPA requires that EPA screening pesticide chemicals for their potential to produce effects require that EPA screen pesticides chemicals of their potential to produce effects similar to those produced by the female hormones (estrogen) in humans and gives EPA the authority to screen certain other chemicals and to include other endocrine effects.
Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act
The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (PDF) details mandates relate to EDSP under section 408(p), including possible exemptions for EDSP screening and testing.

After public comments, external consultations, and scientific peer review, the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program: Statement of Policy, Notice & Priority Setting Workshop (PDF) describes the major elements of EPA's EDSP, as well as its implementation.

Use of High Throughput Assays and Computational Tools
