HOUSE HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT SUBCOMMITTEE MARKUP OF SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT REAUTHORIZATION
06/06/1996 STATEMENT OF EPA ADMINISTRATOR CAROL M. BROWNER ON HOUSE HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT SUBCOMMITTEE MARKUP OF SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT REAUTHORIZATION THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 1996 This legislation reflects the type of bipartisan commitment to public health and environmental protection that the President has called for and has achieved so much progress over the past generation. We are pleased that Congress recognizes that ensuring the safety of the water we drink is one of the most fundamental responsibilities of government and one of President Clinton's highest environmental priorities. The legislation contains the Clinton Administration's recommendations and principles for strengthening this important law. This legislation meets the Administration's goal of protecting public health by setting tough safety standards, preventing pollution in the rivers and lakes that are sources of drinking water and applying common sense to the regulatory process. It honors the President's commitment to provide communities with the money they need to upgrade drinking water systems and strengthen our efforts to expand the public's right to know about contaminants in their drinking water. We believe that breaking through gridlock is what the American people expect and deserve and we will continue to work with Congress on this vital legislation. It is important that Congressional leaders apply this same spirit of bipartisan cooperation to achieve responsible changes to the nation's toxic waste clean up law and efforts to strengthen food safety. |
