Browner Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Presidential Address at Fairleigh Dickinson University Hackensack, NJ Prepared for Delivery March 11, 1996 It is a pleasure to be here with Sen. Lautenberg, who has truly been a champion for public health and environmental protection in the Senate. I want to thank Congressman Torricelli for his strong leadership for public health and environmental protection in the House. It is a great pleasure to be here with all of you, as we come together to remember that protecting our environment means protecting where we live and how we live. Under the President's leadership, this Administration is working to ensure that every American in every community has clean air to breathe. Every community has the right to safe, clean water coming out of the tap. Every community has the right to safe, healthy food on the dinner table. Every community has the right to land that is free of contamination, land that is safe to walk on and live on and send our children out to play. Every community has a right to know about pollution released into the air, the water, the land. Over the past generation, Americans joined together to protect our health and the air, the water, and the land we all share, and we have made great progress. But much remains to be done. President Clinton believes, as I do, that our commitment cannot waver. The responsibility is still ours -- and will always be -- to manage responsibly the natural resources upon which life depends. Each one of us has a part to play in protecting the health of our families, our neighborhoods, our communities -- so that all of us, our children, and our children's children can enjoy a healthy and a prosperous life. Now it is my pleasure to introduce an old friend -- someone who, along with the President, is doing so much to provide the kind of leadership this nation needs. He is a leader with a deep commitment to protecting our environment, protecting our health, protecting our economy, protecting our communities. He knows that we must act today, so that we can be proud to pass along a clean, safe world to future generations. Ladies and gentleman, the Vice President of the United States, Al Gore. |
