EPA ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR TESTIFIES ON
BROWNFIELDS IN PITTSBURGH
EPA Assistant Administrator Elliott Laws of the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response testified on Dec. 9 at a hearing of the Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition in Pittsburgh, Pa. He spoke about reusing old industrial property as a means to revitalize blighted urban areas, improve economic opportunities and protect human health and the environment. Over the last two years, EPA has begun a number of initiatives, which have already made significant contributions to the cleanup of these "brownfields." Brownfield sites can be described as former commercial or industrial sites which remain abandoned due in part to the uncertainty of environmental liability under Superfund or state cleanup laws. EPA's Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative encourages economic redevelopment through environmental cleanup. >From national pilot projects, to job training efforts to partnering with other federal, state and local authorities, EPA is working to create a coordinated response to brownfields redevelopment. For more information about the Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative contact the RCRA/Superfund Hotline at 1-800-424-9346.
