The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Oncor presented 2004 ENERGY STAR for Homes Outstanding Achievement Awards to 24 homebuilders for their commitment to constructing ENERGY STAR qualified homes. Award recipients registered with EPA in the national ENERGY STAR Homes Program and built at least 50 ENERGY STAR homes in 2003.
"These builders have embraced energy efficient construction that benefits both home buyers and the environment. Their commitment should be an example for builders nationwide," said EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene.
Oncor is the corporate sponsor for the ENERGY STAR Homes program and worked with EPA to award outstanding builders throughout Oncor's service area in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and central Texas. Forty-six builders participated in the 2003 Oncor ENERGY STAR Homes program.
Michael Stockard, Oncor's Manager of Energy Efficiency Programs, said, "Builder participation continues to increase in the program. These builders are the leaders in the industry and are setting the standards for Texas. They believe in building quality, energy efficient homes and adding value for their customers."
Collectively, winners built 11,505 ENERGY STAR qualified homes in 2003. An ENERGY STAR qualified home has achieved a home energy rating system score of 86 or higher by an independent, accredited rating provider, certifying that they use significantly less energy than a standard home. Because ENERGY STAR qualified homes use less energy for heating, cooling, and water heating, they cost less to operate.
Nationwide, almost 20 percent of air pollution results from energy used in homes. Just one ENERGY STAR qualified home can keep about 4,500 pounds of greenhouse gases out of the air each year, reducing energy costs for homeowners and improving air quality.
