GREEN DIESEL ENGINE TECHNOLOGY MEETS EPA RULE FOR CLEANER DIESEL TRUCKS AND BUSES

EPA Deputy Administrator Linda Fisher today recognized the recent certification of International Truck and Engine Corporation for its Green Diesel Engine Technology TM to be used in school buses in California. With this certification the corporation has demonstrated that it is possible to meet the heavy-duty diesel particulate emission standards well in advance of the 2007 model year requirements.

At an EPA Headquarters ceremony in Washington, D.C., Fisher said, “We appreciate International’s commitment to bringing cleaner engine technology well ahead of schedule. This shows that these new standards are not only possible but achievable. This is an important and timely step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and soot from the tailpipe. We are well on our way to provide cleaner air for all Americans.”

EPA Administrator Christie Whitman announced on Feb. 28 that the Agency would move forward on schedule with it’s rule to make heavy duty trucks and buses run cleaner. The rule’s requirements go into effect in 2006 for low-sulfur diesel and model year 2007 for cleaner engines.

“This brings new diesel technology to the market today, when it’s most needed,” said Patrick Charbonneau, International’s chief technical officer and engine group vice president. “Schools can continue to rely on the power and fuel-efficiency of diesel buses, while helping to make the clean air goals. We can deliver these green diesel buses not only to California, but to other parts of the country where the fuel is available.”

“Along with International, we recognized the importance of EPA’s low-sulfur diesel rule, said Mike McAdams, BP’s vice president, federal affairs and the environment. “The combined fuel and engine technology works hand-in-hand to dramatically reduce tailpipe emissions from school buses.”

School buses with the new technology are being used in the San Diego, Calif. Unified School District. International’s Green Diesel Engine Technology TM gained EPA certification in March for meeting the particulate emission or soot standards included in the EPA rule to make heavy duty-trucks and buses run cleaner. The new engine technology will be sold initially in California where the Air Resources Board has determined that “green diesel” will meet the state’s air quality standards for low-emission school buses.

BP will supply the ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel that meets the 2006 fuel standard in the Agency’s rule. This new engine technology meets model year 2007 standards for particulate matter or soot.
