Elementary Students in Connecticut Get Environmental Protection Agency Award

BOSTON – More than 225 children from 21 Connecticut elementary schools will receive US EPA Paul G. Keough Earth Artist awards at a celebration from 10:30 am to noon Thursday, June 3 in the Lincoln Theater at the University of Hartford in Hartford.

Students from around New England participated in the 32nd annual Earth Artist contest to demonstrate their knowledge of and commitment to a clean environment.

"These students in Connecticut and throughout New England understand what it takes to protect our environment, and have done artwork that encourages all of us to help keep our air, land and water cleaner,” said EPA New England's regional administrator Robert W. Varney. “At our ceremony, we recognize students in Connecticut who may well be tomorrow’s environmental leaders.”

Connecticut winners of the Earth Artist contest will be recognized at the ceremony where their art and poetry will be displayed. Students received certificates for their accomplishments.

The Earth Artists program requires that teachers use class time to talk about environmental issues. The students are encouraged to submit either a poem or poster to EPA New England that demonstrates their knowledge. Children from kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to participate. All submissions are judged by a panel of EPA staff.

Students from the following Connecticut schools will be recognized at the ceremony:

• Suffield Middle School, Suffield
• Brooklyn Middle School and The Learning Clinic, Brooklyn
• St. Brendan’s School, New Haven
• St. Aloysius School and South School, New Canaan
• Griswold Elementary School, Griswold
• St. Martha’s School, Enfield
• Whitby School, Greenwich
• Burnham School, Bridgewater
• Killingly Intermediate School, Dayville
• Booth Free School, Roxbury
• Washington Primary School, Washington Depot
• Doolittle School, Cheshire
• Myrtle H. Stevens School, Rocky Hill
• Edna Stevens School, Cromwell
• St. Thomas the Apostle, West Hartford
• New Fairfield Middle School, New Fairfield
• Hartland Elementary School, E. Hartland
• Goshen Center School, Goshen
