BOSTON – The South Berwick, Maine wastewater treatment plant was among seven facilities across New England recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection for its commitment to improving water quality.
Harold Clough, superintendent of the town facility, and Albert Roberge, chairman of the board of trustees for the South Berwick Sewer District, were formally presented with an EPA New England Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference on Jan. 31 in Boston.
The annual EPA New England Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award was established to recognize the staff of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality through not only outstanding operation and maintenance, but also continued compliance with permit requirements, effective financial management and on-going operator training. Although smaller facilities such as these often have limited resources, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally.
"We commend the entire staff of the South Berwick Wastewater Treatment Facility for their dedication and hard work in the on-going effort required to improve water quality in the Salmon Falls River," said Ira Leighton, acting regional administrator of EPA New England.
Other 2000 EPA-New England O&M Excellence Award winners included: the Lebanon, NH Wastewater Treatment Facility; the Rutland, Vt. Wastewater Treatment Facility; the Troy/Jay, Vt. Wastewater Treatment Facility; the Wilmington, Vt. Wastewater Treatment Facility; and the Windsor Main, Vt. Wastewater Treatment Facility.
The Lisbon, NH Wastewater Treatment Facility and the Operations Section of the Wastewater Engineering Bureau of the NH Department of Environmental Services were recipients of the "Most Improved Plant" Award.
Last year's EPA National Wastewater Management Excellence Awards from New England were also recognized during the conference. The Lowell Regional Wastewater Utility won first place in the Large Secondary Category for EPA 2000 National Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award. The City of Saco, Maine, Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Abatement Program won First Place in the Municipal Category for the EPA 2000 National CSO Control Program Excellence Award
