FLORIDA FREIGHT COMPANY EXECUTIVE SENTENCED
Angel Dante Fuentes, President of Executive Freight Consolidators of Miami, Fla., was sentenced on May 22, to serve eight months in prison followed by eight months home confinement by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in Miami. Fuentes previously pleaded guilty to two counts of illegally transporting hazardous materials and one count of violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. Fuentes admitted that, on Oct. 1, he illegally attempted to load 500 pounds of the pesticide “Dowicide” aboard an American Airlines passenger flight bound for Quito, Ecuador. The chemical was improperly labeled and was discovered when one of the 10 50-pound bags was torn open during loading. In addition, Fuentes admitted that he illegally offered an additional 2,000 pounds of Dowicide for transportation by ship from Port Everglades, Fla., on Oct. 6. Exposure to Dowicide has the potential to produce acute illness and can impair the ability of crew members to safely operate aircraft and ships. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Department of Transportation Inspector General’s Office and the FBI.
