(11/8/05) From Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, 2005, a team of EPA contractors collected samples at five National Priority List (NPL) sites in the New Orleans area. These samples were taken to assess if Hurricanes Katrina and Rita had any impact on remedies completed at those sites. Sampling results at additional NPL sites in the impacted area will be posted as they become available.
Soil samples were collected at two sites: Agriculture Street Landfill and Southern Shipbuilding. Ground water samples were collected from monitoring wells at three sites: Bayou Bonfouca, Madisonville Creosote Works, and Delatte Metals.
The samples taken at Agriculture Street Landfill (soil), Southern Shipbuilding (soil), and Madison Creosote Works (water) indicate that the remedies for these sites were not affected by the hurricanes. At Bayou Bonfouca, some chemical concentrations were detected but they did not exceed Region 6 screening levels for tap water and no contamination has been reported in the drinking water supply. At Delatte Metals, four metals were detected; however, no contamination has been found in any of the private wells. Monitoring will continue at the wells for both the Bayou Bonfouca and Delatte Metals sites.
Specific test results are available at: https://www.epa.gov/enviro/katrina/emkatrina.html Information about assessment of all NPL sites affected by the hurricanes is available at: https://www.epa.gov/katrina/superfund.html
