EPA ISSUES STUDY OF TEST DATA AVAILABLE ON HIGH VOLUME CHEMICALS
EPA recently completed a detailed study of the public availability of test data on approximately 3,000 industrial chemicals that are produced or imported into the U.S. at volumes in excess of 1 million pounds. The Agency’s review found that only 7 percent of these chemicals have a full set of basic test data and that 43 percent of these high production volume (HPV) chemicals have no test data on their toxicity. Based on these and other findings, the Agency will be working to ensure that basic testing on HPV chemicals is complete and the results are made available to the public. This initiative was highlighted in Vice President Gore’s Earth Day Address on April 21, and will include a voluntary effort with the chemical industry to increase testing and increase right to know. A copy of the review is available from TSCA Information Services at 202-554-1404 or on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/opptintr/chemtest/hpv.htm.
