PHILADELPHIA -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a
$470,500 grant to the City of York to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
Funding will be used to replace three belt filter presses that are used to dry out sewage sludge, with two state-of-the-art high-speed centrifuges. The centrifuges will produce a dryer sludge cake that will reduce disposal costs and require less maintenance.
The project also includes improvements to the systems’ two anaerobic sludge digestors. The digestors reduce the volatile solids content of the sludge to stabilize it and reduce the total volume. The proposed system will increase digestion efficiency.
“Infrastructure improvements, resulting in a more efficient system, will reduce the amount of waste and provide for a more cost-effective solution for wastewater treatment,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
The grant will pay 55 percent of the eligible portion of the construction costs. The balance of the project is being funded with local funds.
