WASHINGTON OWNER OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAB SENTENCED
On March 13, Dr. Abdul Azim Khan of Puyallup, Wash., was sentenced to four months in prison followed by four months home detention and three years supervised release by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in Seattle. Kahn was also ordered to pay $31,044 in restitution for the clean-up of hazardous wastes of which he had illegally disposed. The defendant was convicted of two-counts of illegally storing and transporting more than 14,000 environmental samples at various sites in Washington State in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Kahn, a former professor at Washington State University and environmental consultant, was the owner and operator of Precision Analytics Inc., a Washington state-certified environmental testing facility. His company analyzed hazardous waste samples for the Army, Air Force and Navy, as well as several multi-national corporations. This was a joint investigation involving EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the Washington State Department of Ecology with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center.
