CHRYSLER TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE EMISSION CONTROL COMPONENT ON 700,000 LIGHT TRUCKS
The Environmental Protection Agency today said Chrysler Corporation is recalling 1994, 1995 and 1996 model year RAM pickup trucks and RAM cab-chassis vehicles equipped with gasoline engines because they exceed federal evaporative hydrocarbon standards. EPA said approximately 700,000 vehicles will require installation of a new evaporative charcoal canister, which reduces the emissions of harmful hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons, a major component of smog, irritate the respiratory tract and impair lung function. Evaporative emissions are unburned fuel vapors which leak from motor vehicle engines and fuel systems. These emissions can occur while a vehicle is parked as well as when it is running. EPA testing along with Chrysler’s in-house analysis identified the problem. Chrysler agreed to recall the vehicles and began notifying owners by mail June 19. The recall repair will be performed at no cost to the owner. Owners should schedule an appointment with any Dodge or Chrysler-Plymouth dealer after receiving notice. The repair will take about one hour. Owners who desire additional information may call the Chrysler Customer Center at 800-992-1997 or Kerrin Bressant at 202-564-9291.R-86 ###
