The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced the release of the draft report on the Geophysical Study at the Stauffer Chemical site in Tarpon Springs, Florida. A copy of the report will be available for public review on Monday, June 30, 2003 at the Tarpon Springs Public Library, 138 East Lemon Street in Tarpon Springs.
The Geophysical Study was specifically focused on determining the presence of sinkholes at the site and their potential to form in the future. The objectives of the study included: evaluating the nature and extent of the semi-confining clay layer beneath the site; evaluating soil conditions under the waste ponds; and identifying potential sources of contamination. EPA entered into an enforceable agreement with the Stauffer Management Company that required the company to conduct geophysical studies, evaluate the effect of groundwater on the remedy, and conduct treatability studies on the solidification portion of the remedy before the Agency makes a final decision regarding the remedy for the site. |
