EPA Provides $435,500 Grant for Lewistown Water System

PHILADELPHIA --The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $435,500 grant to the Lewistown Borough Municipal Authority in Mifflin County, Pa. to install new water lines, clean old lines and replace fire hydrants.

“This is another important step in making sure the residents of Lewistown have safe, healthy drinking water,” said Thomas Voltaggio, the acting regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The project will include installing 12,250 feet of new water pipes, cleaning and lining 6,600 feet of existing water pipes, and replacing or relocating 24 fire hydrants in the Borough of Lewistown.

The original water mains in the borough were built between 1897 and 1983, and some are in dire need of repairs or replacement. The improvements will also increase water pressure from borough fire hydrants.

This grant follows up on about $2.2 million in EPA grants to Lewistown municipal authority since 1998 to improve the drinking water infrastructure.

The new grant will pay for about 55 percent of the project cost of $791,818. Local funds will be used for the remaining costs.
