EPA CONFERENCE ON PFIESTERIA RESEARCH

BALTIMORE - The mid-Atlantic office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a free two-day conference addressing Pfiesteria, a toxic microorganism blamed for killing millions of fish in Maryland and Virginia during the summer of 1997.  The conference entitled "Pfiesteria ‘98:  State and Federal Retrospective," is scheduled for January 6-7, 1999 at the Omni Inner Harbor Hotel, 101 West Fayette Street in Baltimore.

The Honorable Parris Glendening, Governor of Maryland will present the keynote address on Wednesday, January 6.  Chuck Fox, assistant administrator of EPA’s water program, and Nancy Foster, assistant administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will also participate.

During the conference, members of federal and state government agencies and the academic community will discuss the results of research and monitoring during the summer of 1998 and present projected 1999 monitoring plans.
