(#04040) New York, New York -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced that a coalition of Vieques community groups will receive a $20,000 grant to help them interpret and review documents and information related to the investigation of contamination on the Eastern side of Vieques. The work is being conducted by the Navy under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) with EPA oversight. The coalition, consisting of the Comit‚ Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de Vieques, the Allianza de Mujeres Viequenses, and the Grupo Comunitario por la Descontaminacion de Vieques, will hire a technical expert and perform community outreach.
"This grant will help the people of Vieques to understand the complex technical information and data produced during the Navy investigation, and will enable them to better participate in the process," said Regional Administrator Jane Kenny. The grant will be for one year and will allow the grantees to review all documents associated with the RCRA cleanup on Vieques. EPA will work closely with the grantees to make sure they have all the materials they require. Some of the funds budgeted for the grant will be used by the grantees to share the information they have with the rest of the Vieques community. |
