(05/15/03) Tonight, EPA Administrator Christie Whitman will present ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards to 39 businesses and organizations for their outstanding contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. EPA will recognize such companies as Lowe’s Companies Inc., Eastman Kodak Company and Panasonic for their excellence and voluntary leadership.
“Our partners are key to the success of the ENERGY STAR program,” said Administrator Christie Whitman. “Today, we honor these voluntary environmental leaders with the 2003 ENERGY STAR Award. These winners demonstrate that you can improve our environment while saving energy and money. The ENERGY STAR program stands for energy efficiency and environmental protection without sacrificing quality. We will work toward increasing the awareness of ENERGY STAR and encouraging consumers and businesses to join us in protecting the environment.”
Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy to power 15 million homes and reduce the green house gas emissions equivalent to that of 14 million cars -- all while saving consumers $7 billion. In addition, more than 100,000 new homes have earned the ENERGY STAR, and more than 15,000 office buildings, schools, supermarkets and hotels have benchmarked their energy performance as a basis for future progress. All this has been accomplished without sacrificing features or personal comfort.
ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce air pollution through increased energy efficiency. The program offers businesses and consumers energy efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect the environment for future generations. More than 7,000 organizations have become ENERGY STAR partners and are committed to improving the energy efficiency of products, homes and businesses.
The awards ceremony and banquet is being held this evening at 6 p.m. (EST) in Washington, D.C. at the Capital Hilton Hotel, 1001 16th St., N.W., phone 202-393-1000. Media are welcome to attend.
