EPA RECOVERING ITS CLEANUP COSTS AT NATIONAL OIL SERVICES SITE, WEST HAVEN, CT

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today mailed informational letters to about 750 parties who may share some financial responsibility to pay for the estimated $1.5 million cleanup of the National Oil Services site in West Haven, CT. The letters state EPA's intent to recover its costs from those parties that generated waste oil which was sent to the site. Recipients include mostly private companies, as well as some cities, towns and federal, state and local agencies.

EPA expects the cost for each party to settle this matter to be in the range of 8 to 15 cents for every gallon sent to the site, with the majority of parties being asked to pay no more than $3,000. Each party's settlement contribution will be calculated based on hazardous waste manifests documenting shipments made to the site.

EPA has a dedicated hotline to assist the letter recipients in obtaining more information. A voice mail box is available to leave a message outside of operating hours or if the Hotline is busy. Due to the large volume of requests for information anticipated, individuals should allow up to three business days for a response.
