PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $970,000 grant to the Ohio County Public Service District, Ohio County, West Virginia to help pay for a new sewer line for residents in the Town of West Liberty.
The new line will benefit 169 customers in West Liberty who now dispose of wastewater into failing septic systems and by directly discharging into nearby waterways.
Most residents in West Liberty need to use septic tank systems for sewage disposal and treatment. These septic systems often malfunction and pollute groundwater. Some homes in the town have no septic systems and discharge wastewater directly into the North Fork of Short Creek and its tributaries, which poses an obvious health hazard.
The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $1.76 million project cost, and the district will use another grant for the balance.
