City of Arnold Gets Grant to Upgrade Sewers

ARNOLD, Pa. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $1 million grant to the City of Arnold, Westmoreland County to improve its outdated sewer system and help prevent sewer overflows into the Allegheny River.

“Old, inadequate sewer systems are a major cause of water pollution problems in many cities nationwide. The EPA and state governments believe that improving sewer systems is a major component of improving water quality, and this grant to Arnold is an important first step,” said Bradley M. Campbell, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

Funding will be used to replace part of the combined sewer system with separate sanitary and storm sewer lines, which will reduce the combined sewer overflows into the Allegheny River, a popular recreational waterway. During wet weather, untreated wastewater is diverted directly to the river. Funding will also be used for flow monitoring, sewer cleaning/inspection, and replacement of the deteriorated sewers with new sanitary sewers, which will prevent extraneous ground water from entering the sewer system.

The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $1.8 million project, and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority will provide a loan for the balance.
