EPA RECOGNIZES FREMONT FACILITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM

     SAN FRANCISCO    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently accepted TriCities Recycling and Disposal Facility in Fremont, Calif. as a charter member of the National Environmental Performance Track, a new recognition program for companies with proven compliance records, an environmental management system and strong community outreach.

     "Performance Track offers us a great opportunity to showcase businesses that are going the extra mile for the environment.  We appreciate and support the great work being done at TriCities," said Laura Yoshii, acting regional administrator for the EPA's Pacific Southwest Office.

     "We recognize that going beyond compliance is good for business and good for the communities we serve," said Mike Crosetti, district manager of TriCities Waste Management, Inc. "This award confirms that we have some of the best environmental programs in the country."

     TriCities Recycling and Disposal Facility collects, recycles and disposes of materials from over 200,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Fremont, Newark and Union City.  TriCities also diverts more than 160,000 tons annually of concrete, wood/green waste, metal, E- scrap and other materials.  

     The EPA selected Tri-Cities as one of 228 organizations nationwide -- and one of four Waste Management, Inc. facilities -- for Achievement Track.  Other Waste Management facilities include: Waste Management of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif.; Simi Valley Recycling and Disposal Facility in Simi Valley, Calif.; and Altamont Landfill near Livermore, Calif.

     As a result of its environmental management system, TriCities has conserved 153 acres of wetlands and has committed to restoring 5 to 10 more acres of wetlands over the next three years. Waste Management Corp., TriCities corporate parent, will provide an annual report to the EPA outlining its environmental performanceat all of its facilities.
