(10/09/03) EPA released the “Travel and Environmental Implications of School Siting” study on Oct. 8. This study is the first to empirically examine the relationship between school location, the environment built around schools, how kids get to school and the impact of air emissions on those choices. School siting and the design of the surrounding geographic area affect each of these matters; over the next few decades, thousands of schools will be built or renovated. This study provides important information for communities to consider their decisions as they meet challenges to achieve educational, fiscal and environmental goals.
