WHAT: Over 200 State, Regional and National Officials, Environmental Advocates, Industry and Utility Representatives Participate In Forum To Address Balancing Northeast Energy Needs With Clean Air Goals.

Entitled "Keeping the Lights On and the Air Clean," the conference will examine the outlook for meeting increased energy demands in the northeast and chart a vision for harmonizing the growth in energy supply with on-going efforts to protect the public from adverse health and environmental impacts of air pollution. The California situation served as a wake-up call to the country. This conference will describe Northeast states efforts to ensure sufficient, reliable energy supply along with substantial additional air pollution reductions.

An estimated 7,000 megawatts of additional, new power has been permitted in New England:

• How can the Northeast states substantially improve air quality without sacrificing energy reliability?
• How can the Northeast example of multi-pollutant emission controls, energy efficiency and renewable standards serve as a roadmap for Congressional action?
• How can the Northeast states balance the need for new generation while addressing local community concerns?
