U.S. EPA fines Cunico Corporation of Long Beach $13,750 for hazardous waste violations

SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently fined the Cunico Corporation of Long Beach, Calif., $13,750 for improper hazardous waste handling, a violation of federal law.

In August, 2003, EPA inspectors determined that Cunico had failed to obtain a permit for storage of hazardous waste (waste oil & solvent) longer than 180 days; keep containers of hazardous waste closed during storage; and prepare a hazardous waste manifest according to regulations. The Cunico Corporation has since corrected these violations.

The Cunico Corporation is located at 1910 West 16th Street, in Long Beach. The firm manufactures specialty metal fittings and valves.

"Companies operating near population centers must be particularly careful with how they handle hazardous waste," said Jeff Scott, Waste Management Division Director for the EPA's Pacific Southwest Office. "Attention to detail often prevents accidents before they happen."

Under the authority of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the EPA manages a hazardous waste program, an underground storage tank program, and a solid waste program that includes development of wastereduction strategies such as recycling.
