Senator John Chafee was one of this country’s great champions for environmental protection. It was an honor for me to have had the opportunity to work with him over these past seven years. Because of his tireless leadership, Americans today breathe cleaner air, drink safer water and are far less threatened by toxic wastes. This generation and future generations of Americans will always be deeply indebted to him. He was a great statesman and a great gentleman, and we shall miss him. America’s environment has lost one of its most faithful friends.
