CHICAGO (April 15, 2009) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has presented 2008 Energy Star awards to 12 Midwest businesses and organizations for their outstanding accomplishments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. They are among 89 national winners chosen from more than 15,000 partners in the Energy Star program.

EPA Region 5 Energy Star Partners of the Year are: Arcelor Mittal USA, Chicago, Ill.; Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich.; Whirlpool Corp., Benton Harbor, Mich.; 3M, St. Paul, Minn.; Best Buy Co. Inc., Richfield, Minn.; Xcel Energy, Minneapolis, Minn.; ITW Food Equipment Group - North America, Troy, Ohio; ProVia Door, Sugarcreek, Ohio; Technical Consumer Products Inc., Aurora, Ohio; Menards, Eau Claire, Wis.; Whitefish Bay School District, Whitefish Bay, Wis.; and Wisconsin Focus on Energy, Madison, Wis.

"We congratulate these Energy Star award winners for their leadership in saving energy and resources, and helping fight climate change," said Cheryl Newton, director of EPA Region 5's Air and Radiation Division. "They are helping the environment and their bottom line."

With the help of Energy Star, Americans saved $19 billion on their energy bills in 2008 and avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 29 million vehicles. To date, 940,000 new homes and more than 6,000 office buildings, schools, hospitals and public buildings have earned the Energy Star. Since 2000, more than 2.5 billion Energy Star qualified products have been sold.

EPA introduced the Energy Star program in 1992 as a voluntary partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency. Today, the program offers businesses and consumers energy-efficient solutions to save energy, money and help protect the environment for future generations.
