BOSTON -- New England participants in EPA's National Environmental Performance Track program met yesterday with Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Robert Varney, the newly sworn-in Regional Administrator for EPA's New England office.
EPA's Performance Track program recognizes facilities that have demonstrated a commitment to superior environmental performance and have a good record of compliance with environmental regulations. Currently, 30 New England facilities have been accepted by EPA as members of Performance Track.
The meeting was designed to discuss ideas for encouraging energy efficiency improvements among businesses participating in voluntary EPA programs, using the Performance Track facilities' leadership in implementing programs to reduce their energy footprint, and in publicly reporting on the innovative programs they have implemented. Representatives of 15 Performance Track facilities met with EPA staff, Governor Whitman, and Regional Administrator Varney.
Gov.Whitman thanked the facilities for their leadership and commitment to work to go beyond compliance with environmental laws and regulations. She noted that voluntary methods to achieve higher levels of environmental performance are the kinds of approaches that she and the President support.
