(#04025) New York, N.Y. -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Jane M. Kenny today announced the availability of up to $60,000 for a not-for-profit, organization or public agency or institution to collect and disseminate environmental information on St. Croix. Currently, most official government environmental information is located on St. Thomas.
"The people of St. Croix deserve easy access to environmental information," said Ms. Kenny. "The group that gets this award will increase environmental awareness on the island, especially about those issues or problems that could effect the health of St. Croix residents and the fragile Virgin Islands ecosystem." Any educational or environmental public agency, institution, college, university or not-for-profit organization based on St. Croix is eligible to submit a proposal. All of the proposals must describe how the proposed project will develop and maintain a repository of environmental information regarding issues in St. Croix. Other priorities are that the project must inform the community about the availability of environmental information. The project must also establish a mechanism to facilitate access to the information; serve as a liaison between the community and EPA; identify community concerns and relevant community organizations, agencies and key residents; maintain interest among community groups in outreach initiatives; and organize and implement planned EPA outreach activities and seminars. To apply for the project, applicants must submit a proposal by March 22, 2004 to:
