U.S. EPA PROPOSES TO REMOVE PORTION OF HUNTERS POINT FROM NPL

     (San Francisco) -- A portion of the Hunters Point Annex Naval Station has been cleaned up and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is now proposing it be removed from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).  The NPL is EPA's list of hazardous waste sites potentially posing the greatest long-term threat to public health and the environment.
 
     An 88-acre site, most recently used primarily as a Navy and private residential area, is the only part of the 936-acre Hunters Point Superfund site that is proposed for deletion from the NPL. The site, known as parcel A,  is bounded by Crisp Street and Spear Avenue to the south, Griffith St. to the west, Fisher Avenue to the east, and the Bayview Hunters Point district to the north. Other parcels at the Hunters Point site will remain on the NPL.

     From 1976 to 1986, Parcel A housed a Navy repair facility. A Navy investigation found that the soils contained volatile organic compounds, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, herbicides and other contaminants. The Navy subsequently cleaned these soils.

     The Hunters Point Shipyard was the original ship repair facility for San Francisco Bay,  and was in use for 150 years. Most of the industrial wastes created from the ship repair and maintenance facilities were disposed of at the shipyard.  

     Field work is being performed to evaluate the nature and extent of the contamination at the remainder of the site's parcels. Results of the field work will be included in reports being prepared by the Navy. The Navy work includes enforceable schedules for the completion of the contaminant studies and cleanup. The U.S. EPA and state of California are parties to the agreement and oversee the Navy's efforts.
