U.S. EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON SELF-AUDITING BY COMPANIES

      (San Francisco)--  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(U.S. EPA) will hold a public meeting on Friday, January 20, in
San Francisco to solicit comments on additional ways to encourage
companies to examine their operations for environmental problems,
disclose them to the U.S. EPA, and correct the violations.

     The meeting will be held at U.S. EPA Region 9; 75 Hawthorne
St.; California Room, First Floor, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Those
who want to comment at the "open mike" session, should contact
Brian Riedel at (202) 564-5006 or Geoff Garver at (202) 564-5017.

     The U.S. EPA is reexamining its policy on self-auditing of
facilities. The U.S. EPA encourages companies to do self-audits
and to disclose the information to the Agency with the incentive
that by doing so, they could possibly avoid future enforcement
actions. However, the U.S. EPA has found that companies may be
reluctant to disclose violations because they are concerned
they'll be held liable for the violations. Consequently, the U.S.
EPA is seeking comments on possible incentives to encourage self-
audits and reporting.
