MONTROSE, Pa. -- Elementary students from Susquehanna County will take part in a three-day outdoor learning program at Salt Springs Park under a $5,000 environmental education grant.

The EPA awarded the grant to the Friends of Salt Springs Park, Inc., a citizens group formed in 1994 to maintain and develop the sprawling 405-acre park that includes hiking trails through a vista of several waterfalls, wooded areas and a deep gorge.

Under the program, about 150 fourth, fifth and sixth graders from six school districts in this rural county will be bused to the park to participate in hands-on outdoor learning activities produced by Institute for Earth Education, which has run similar programs at parks throughout the country.

"This educational program will help students think critically about environmental issues, with an emphasis on problem-solving, participatory decision-making and leadership skills," said W. Michael McCabe, regional administrator for the mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region, 25 grant recipients include schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
