EPA Awards $725,900 Grant to Sharon to Upgrade Sewers

PHILADELPHIA -- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a
$725,900 grant to the City of Sharon, Mercer County, Pa. to rehabilitate and replace sanitary sewer lines in a section of the city.

The improvements will be made to sewer lines along Chestnut, Vine, and Silver Streets and through Centennial Park, along North Water Avenue, Clark Street and Buhl Park. These areas have been plagued by problems from cracked and separated pipes that allow groundwater to enter the system.

The project, which is slated to begin in April 2002, will eliminate inflow and infiltration in the collection system and prevent overloads at the city’s treatment plant.

“Old, inadequate sewer systems are a major cause of water pollution problems across America. This grant will help Sharon improve wastewater treatment, and thereby eliminate a potential serious health hazard to residents,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The grant will reimburse the city for 55 percent of the project’s construction costs. The balance of the project is being funded with state and local funds.
