PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $483,900 grant to Monroe County, Pa. to help fund a new wastewater treatment plant and collection system to serve the Pocono Mountains Business Park and Corporate Center.
“Old, inadequate wastewater treatment systems continue to be a major source of water pollution for many communities nationwide. EPA believes that projects like this will assure water quality while providing economic opportunities and a better quality of life for our citizens,” said Thomas C. Voltaggio, acting regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
The treatment plant would support business customers at the business park, which could create 3,000 to 4,000 new jobs.
The current old lagoon treatment system, which supported an abandoned religious summer retreat at the site, can not handle the level of treatment that is projected at the business park.
The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $879,818 project, and the county will pay for the balance with local funds.
