EPA Awards $1.9 Million to Crisfield, Md. To Upgrade Treatment Plant

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $1.9 million grant to the City of Crisfield, Md. for improvements to the city’s wastewater treatment plant that will reduce nutrients discharged into the Chesapeake Bay.

Funding will go toward construction of a biological nutrient removal treatment system and rehabilitate other parts of the treatment plant that remove silt and disinfect water.

“This is another step in obtaining the nutrient reduction goals of the 2000 Chesapeake Bay agreement. EPA and the state of Maryland are committing significant resources to protect the Chesapeake Bay for future generations,” said Thomas Voltaggio, acting regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The biological nutrient removal system will help the city to reduce the amount of nutrients discharged to the Chesapeake Bay. Excessive nutrients such as nitrogen in the water can disrupt aquatic life and promote nuisance algae blooms that starve water of oxygen and kill fish.

Funding will cover about 55 percent of the project costs, with remaining costs coming from state and local funding.
