IOWA COMPANY AND OWNER VIOLATE RCRA LAW
Fiberdyne Inc., of Cedar Falls, Iowa, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 14, to violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by illegally disposing of spent acetone, a hazardous waste. In addition, Mikkel Mandt, a director and owner of Fiberdyne, pleaded guilty as an accessory after the fact by learning of the company’s violations and failing to notify the EPA. Fiberdyne manufactures fiberglass water treatment systems and maintains facilities in Cedar Falls and New Hartford, Iowa. Employees used Acetone to clean their hands, and resin, fiberglass, and other substances from tools and equipment. From January 1991 to May 1996, Fiberdyne illegally disposed distillery equipment “bottoms” containing acetone residue into dumpsters at the Black Hawk County Landfill. Acetone is a flammable material that presents a fire hazard when improperly disposed of. As part of the plea agreement Fiberdyne faces a maximum potential fine of up to $150,000. Mandt faces a maximum penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division.
