EPA Public Availability Session Rescheduled to Discuss Soil Sampling Results in North Birmingham

(Atlanta, Ga. – May 16, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a public availability session regarding results of a soil sampling investigation in Harriman Park, Collegeville and Fairmont neighborhoods at select properties near the Walter Coke, Inc. facility in North Birmingham, AL. Representatives from the EPA, Walter Coke, Inc. and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will be available to provide information, answer questions and address citizen concerns.
Walter Coke, Inc. (former Sloss Industries Corporation) conducted soil sampling under an agreement with the EPA in 2009. The 2009 investigation was conducted to determine if contamination (arsenic and a group of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) exists and to evaluate if any further response actions are necessary to protect public health and the environment.
