REVISED PARTICULATE MATTER CRITERIA
DOCUMENT RELEASED FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
Martha (Matheny) Casey 202-564-7842 / [email protected]
The second draft of the “Air Quality Criteria for Particulate Matter (PM)”document has been released for public review and comment. This draft incorporates revisions made in response to earlier public comments and a review by the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) of the first external review draft. It assesses scientific information pertinent to PM criteria development that has become available since the 1996 criteria document was published. The draft includes assessments of human exposure, PM monitoring measurement methods, numerous other papers generated by scientists in the Agency’s research laboratories, and published research by U.S. and international scientists. EPA will accept comments on the new information until July 12. After the comment period closes, the draft PM Criteria Document will be reviewed by the CASAC at a public meeting which will be scheduled to take place in Research Triangle Park, NC, sometime during July or August. Copies of the draft document are available on the web at: https://www.epa.gov/ncea/new.htm. A limited number of printed copies of the External Review Draft of the revised EPA PM Criteria Document (EPA/600/P-99/002aB, bB) are available from the National Service Center for Environmental Publications (1-800-490-9198). The document is also available from the Center for Environmental Assessment (919-541-3637) formatted on a CD ROM.
A preliminary draft PM Staff Paper, “Review of National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for Particulate Matter,” developed by EPA’s Office of Research and Development, also will be available for public comment later this Spring and will be reviewed at the same CASAC meeting. The Clean Air Act requires a review of the six criteria standards every five years. The last PM criteria document was published in 1996. The current standards for PM were set in 1997.
