(10/09/03) Rhonda Cason, an employee of the Voss Truck Stop (VTS) in Cuba, Mo., pled guilty on Sept. 30 to obstructing a proceeding involving the investigation of the VTS. During the investigation of a fuel spill, evidence was uncovered supporting allegations that VTS was selling regular grade gasoline as premium grade gasoline; and was selling non-reformulated gasoline as reformulated gasoline. Additional evidence was uncovered supporting allegations that employees made false statements to the U.S. Department of Transportation and obstructed EPA proceedings. The use of reformulated gasoline is required in some areas of the country during specific seasons of the year to reduce automobile air pollution which can increase symptoms of respiratory illnesses in people. When sentenced, Cason faces a maximum possible sentence of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division (St. Louis) and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in St. Louis.
